Make sure that the firewire plug is fully plugged in both ends. Sometimes it can be a little firm before it's fully plugged in.
I think the next thing I would try is to connect your new drive to another Mac and see whether the problem persists. If it does then you probably have either a faulty drive or a faulty cable. If so, get it replaced.
If there is no problem when connected to another Mac then the problem is most likely related to your Mac, either software or hardware.
Borrow another drive cable & plugin to your Mac. If it works OK you have another indication of where the fault is.
